Quakecon reports

Gamespy is at QuakeCon... and we're not! John Carmack talks Quake, Doom, and his plans for the next-gen consoles, and gives the Xbox 360 lots of love. Carmack draws an interesting parallel between aerospace development and the current escalating budget for video games. Soon, no one will try anything new. It's a very thorough, and LONG article that shows Carmack is trying to keep id and their games at the front of things to come. Oh best news is that the source code for Quake 3 will soon be released for public tinkering. Frag on!

Kingdom of Loathing

And the winner of most irreverent game goes to... Kingdom of Loathing, a turn-based RPG that is just... well you'll have to play it. Players take on the role of six character classes, including the musclebound Seal Clubber, the Disco Bandit or the rogueish Accordion Thief. Creatures you need to overcome include Sabre-Toothed Limes (ouch) and Ninja Snowmen. And the items... well lets not get started, but they're definitely not your regular D&D Short sword +1 material. There's also cool merchandise, to let folks know how coolly subversive you are. PS: Don't drink too much Mad Train Wine.

Planarity

Like Katamari Damancy, some games are just beguiling in their simplicity. Witness the hair-tearing gameplay of the web-based puzzler Planarity, which will have you biting your nails as you race against the clock to untangle these knots. Sorry, sword not provided to solve these Gordian Knots.

Video game music

If you don't know, video game music has been getting increasingly legit, and sophisticated. An article from the Associated Press says the soundtrack for Halo 2 sold 100,000 copies, and the music for Advent Rising is going to cost 300 grand, which music inspired by "13th-century Italian opera". So will Snoop Dog rap to that?

Gamer Dog?

It's a long story.
